The one moving part on your tent

Worth pausing here: how patient are you at 2 a.m.? If you know you are a one-handed yanker, zipper quality should weigh heavier in your choice than fabric thickness ever will.
Why the fabric is tougher than it looks
Ultralight tent fabric is thin, and thin reads as fragile. But thin is not the same as weak. Fabric strength is measured in denier, which is roughly how thick each thread is. An ultralight tent might use 10D to 20D fabric, while an entry-level tent uses 40D to 75D, a spread Better Trail breaks down clearly. Lower denier does mean less abrasion resistance, but it does not mean the panels tear in a normal night out.

- How careful are you with gear? If you are gentle and will clean a zipper, ultralight rewards you. If you are hard on things, weight up slightly and buy robust zippers.
- How much do you sleep out? A few weekends a year means almost anything lasts. Big mileage means cost-per-night favors a shelter built to take it, whichever fabric that is.
