The Slippery, Stretchy, Misunderstood Fabric Holding Up Half the Ultralight Tents on the Trail

Pitch a dozen ultralight tents at a busy trailhead and odds are good that most of the rain flies are cut from the same quietly controversial fabric. It is light, it is waterproof, it sags at the worst possible moment, and half the people relying on it could not tell you what it actually is. If you have started shopping for a first shelter and keep tripping over the word, here is the plain version: what is silnylon fabric, why it is holding up so much of the gear on the trail, and how to know whether it belongs on your own trip.

So what is silnylon, really?

Silnylon is a mashup of two words: silicone and nylon. Makers take a thin woven nylon and press liquid silicone into it from both sides, soaking the fibers rather than just painting a layer on top. That two step trick does two jobs at once. It makes the fabric highly waterproof, and it substantially boosts tear strength, so the finished cloth is strong for how little it weighs. One thing to file away early: silnylon is waterproof, but it is not breathable. It keeps rain out, and it also keeps your breath in, which is why silnylon shelters live or die on ventilation and pitch. You will also see it sold by “denier” (the thickness of the thread), so a 20D silnylon is a little burlier than a 15D one.

Why it holds up half the tents on the trail

Silnylon is everywhere because it sits in a rare sweet spot. It is far lighter than the cheap, heavy polyurethane coated nylon you find in big box tents, and far cheaper than premium Dyneema. For most beginners that middle ground is exactly where a first ultralight shelter should live.

It also has history on its side. Respected cottage brands like Tarptent, Mountain Laurel Designs, and Hilleberg have leaned on it for years, and it is the fabric of choice for people sewing their own shelters from bolt cloth sold by shops like Ripstop by the Roll. When a material has held up under that many tarps for that many seasons, it has earned its spot.

Worth asking yourself: how many nights a year will you really sleep out, and how tight is your budget? If the answer is “a handful of trips” and “please, something under premium prices,” silnylon is probably already the right neighborhood.

The slippery part: why the seams need silicone

Here is the first thing that catches newcomers off guard. When a shelter is sewn, the needle punches thousands of tiny holes along every seam, and in a downpour those holes let water in. On most fabrics you close them with seam tape. On silnylon you cannot, because the only thing that sticks to silicone is more silicone. Tape slides right off.

So silnylon seams get sealed with a thin bead of liquid silicone sealant (Silnet is the common one), painted along the stitch line. Some tents arrive already sealed from the factory. Others show up bare and expect you to do it yourself at the kitchen table before your first wet night out. It is not hard, but it is a real chore, and skipping it is the number one reason a “waterproof” silnylon tent leaks. Worth asking yourself: are you willing to spend an evening seam sealing, or would you rather pay a bit more for a shelter that comes done? Both are fine answers. Just decide before you buy, not the night before a storm.

The stretchy part: why your tent sags at 2am

This is the trait that gives silnylon its reputation. Nylon absorbs water, and as silnylon soaks up moisture from rain or heavy dew it stretches and goes slack. You pitch a drum tight shelter at dusk, the humidity climbs overnight, and by the small hours the walls have sagged enough to sit on your face or pool water. The fix is simple: get up, snug the guylines, go back to sleep. But you do have to actually do it.

The flip side of that stretch is a genuine advantage. That same “give” lets a silnylon shelter flex in gusts instead of ripping, spreading the load rather than fighting it. In real wind, a fabric that bends is often a fabric that survives. So the sag and the wind resistance are two faces of the same coin.

Worth asking yourself: do you mostly camp in wet, humid country, and does the idea of retensioning guylines in the dark annoy you or just sound like part of the deal?

The misunderstood part: what silnylon is not

Most of the confusion online comes from lumping different fabrics under one name. Plain PU coated nylon (the stuff in budget tents) is not silnylon, and it behaves worse: heavier, and the coating can flake and fail over years. True silnylon is coated on both sides with silicone, and that coating does not degrade the way PU does.

The other mixup is silnylon versus silpoly, its silicone coated polyester cousin. In short, silpoly barely stretches, sheds sun better, and dries faster, while silnylon is stronger for its weight and has that useful flex in wind. Neither is “best,” they just trade different strengths, and silpoly is worth its own closer look when you are ready.

One number you will see quoted is the hydrostatic head rating, measured in millimeters, which is just how much water pressure the fabric holds back before it weeps. Worth asking yourself: when a listing says “silicone treated ripstop nylon,” do you now know to check whether it is coated on one side or both? That single detail separates real silnylon from a cheaper impostor.

How to spot it and keep it alive

You can often identify silnylon by touch and sight. It feels slick and slippery on both faces, and its sealed seams show up as thin, shiny, clear lines of silicone rather than a strip of matte tape. If a spec sheet says silnylon or “silicone impregnated nylon,” that is your confirmation.

Keeping it alive is mostly about two habits. First, respect the sun: nylon is more vulnerable to UV than polyester, so a silnylon shelter left pitched in blazing light for weeks on end will age faster than one that only sees the sun on trip days. Second, never store it damp. Pitch it or hang it at home until it is bone dry, then pack it loose. Wet storage grows mildew that no fabric survives gracefully.

So which way should you go?

Silnylon is the right first choice if you want a shelter that is light, affordable, tough for its weight, and field proven, and you can live with two small chores: sealing the seams (or paying to have it done) and snugging the guylines when it soaks up a wet night. For the vast majority of beginners, that is a very easy yes.

Lean elsewhere only in two cases. If you camp in near constant rain and hate retensioning, silpoly’s low stretch may suit your temperament better. And if budget truly is no object and you want a fabric with almost no stretch and no seam sealing at all, that points you toward Dyneema, which we cover in its own post so you can weigh it properly.

Whichever way you land, you are no longer guessing. You know what the fabric is, why it behaves the way it does, and what it will ask of you on a wet, windy night. That is the whole point: pick the shelter that matches your trips and your patience, and let every mile after that be the fun part.
