Silnylon Is Stronger. Here's Why That Stopped Mattering to Me.

The first time I watched my silnylon tarp go slack in an overnight drizzle, I was standing outside in my socks at 2 a.m., re-tensioning guylines by headlamp. Somewhere in that soggy moment, a fact I had read a hundred times quietly stopped feeling important.

That fact is this: silnylon is stronger than silpoly. It is true. It is also, for most people just getting into ultralight shelters, the wrong thing to build a decision around. Let me walk you through why.

Quick grounding first, since the names blur together at the start. Both are lightweight woven fabrics coated in silicone to make them waterproof. Silnylon is silicone-coated nylon. Silpoly is silicone-coated polyester. Same job, different base thread, and that one difference quietly drives everything below.

Yes, silnylon really is stronger

This is not a myth you need to argue with. Nylon fibers are tougher ounce for ounce than polyester, so when you coat nylon in silicone to make silnylon, you get a fabric with excellent tear and tensile strength for its weight. That is exactly why it was the default ultralight shelter fabric for decades, and why gear makers like Seek Outside still favor it for rugged use.

Before you read on, ask yourself one honest question: across all your trips so far, how many times have you actually torn a shelter?

The catch hiding inside the word “stronger”

Here is the thing about strength you never use: it does not do much for you. A shelter in the real world fails from a snapped stake, a rushed pitch, or a snag on a branch far more often than from the fabric itself giving out. For most trips, both fabrics are already stronger than the situations you put them in.

Meanwhile, nylon carries a trait that shows up on nearly every wet night. Nylon fibers absorb water, swell, and the fabric stretches. That is the sag. Your perfect evening pitch loosens overnight, and you climb out into the rain to tighten it again. Silnylon absorbs water and stretches when wet. Silpoly barely absorbs any, so it holds its shape and does not gain water weight sitting in a storm.

The weight part is easy to underrate until it happens to you. A silnylon fly can pick up several ounces of water after a few hours of steady rain, and you carry that soggy weight until it fully dries out, which in a wet climate might be days.

So the honest scoreboard is not “strong versus weak.” It is a rare failure you can usually patch, traded against a small annoyance you may face every single rainy morning.

It is also worth saying plainly: the design usually matters more than the fabric. A shelter with smart guyout points, reinforced stress corners, and a shape that sheds wind will outperform a “stronger” fabric hung in a sloppy pitch. Two shelters in the same fabric can behave completely differently, so do not let the material label do all your thinking for you.

Think about where you actually camp. If mornings are damp or rain is common, how many nights do you want to spend adjusting guylines in the dark?

What silpoly gives up, and what it gives back

Silpoly is not a free upgrade. You give up a slice of tear strength, and it can be a little fussier to repair in the field, since it wants specific tape rather than whatever patch is in your kit.

In return you get a fabric that stays taut when wet, does not soak up extra weight, and handles sun far better. Polyester is naturally more UV resistant than nylon, so a silpoly shelter holds its strength longer under strong, repeated sun exposure, as fabric comparisons consistently note. That combination is why so many respected makers have moved new designs to polyester.

This is not a fad. Brands like Durston, Six Moon Designs, and even longtime nylon loyalist Tarptent have shifted models to silpoly, a change Backpacker documented in detail.

Which failure would actually bother you more: a slow sag on every rainy night, or a rare tear you can tape and forget?

The one place silnylon’s strength still wins

Nylon’s stretch is not purely a downside. In a hard wind, that give lets the fabric flex and soak up the shock instead of dumping all of it straight into your seams, stakes, and poles.

Henry Shires of Tarptent makes this point well: the stretch gives nylon a dynamic quality that can keep it from tearing when a gust slams the wall or you trip over a guyline. So in exposed, high-wind alpine camping, silnylon’s strength plus stretch is a genuine advantage, not marketing. This is the situation the “stronger” argument was really built for.

Be honest about your terrain: are you mostly in sheltered forest and meadow, or regularly above treeline where the wind has room to run?

So which one is actually for you?

This is not a buying guide, so I am not going to point you at a specific tent. I just want to help you land the plane. Read yourself into one of these two buckets.

Lean silpoly if you camp in wet or humid country, you hate re-pitching in the rain, you spend long days in strong sun, or you simply want a shelter that stays put with less fuss. For most beginners in most conditions, this is the more forgiving choice.

Lean silnylon if you regularly camp exposed and windy, you want the highest tear strength for the weight, or you are shopping on a budget, since silnylon shelters are often cheaper, everywhere, and thoroughly proven.

Notice that neither answer came from the strength number alone. It came from your weather, your terrain, and how much midnight maintenance you are willing to do.

The question that replaced strength

Silnylon is stronger than silpoly, and for a small but real group of hikers, mostly the windy, exposed, alpine crowd, that still decides the matter. For everyone else, and probably for you if you are just starting out, the fabric that stays tight, stays dry, and shrugs off the sun is the one worth reaching for.

Strength is a great headline. It just turned out to be the wrong question for the way I actually camp, and it may be the wrong question for you too. The better question is which fabric fails you least on the nights you will actually spend outside.

Answer that honestly and the choice tends to make itself, long before you ever compare a single strength number.
