It was somewhere around 2 AM acouple years back. Rain had been tapping the fly for hours, and I woke up to fabric hanging a scant few inches above my face, sagging like a wet bedsheet. Polyester is the opposite. It is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water instead of soaking it up, absorbing less than one percent of its weight. In plain terms, a silpoly fly you pitch drum-tight at dusk is still tight at 2 AM, rain or no rain. There is no midnight crawl, no re-tensioning, no soggy socks.
That single property cascades into a few real-world wins when the weather turns:

The fiber is strong for its weight, which means makers can spin it into the very lightest fabrics on the market. If you are chasing the absolute lowest number on the scale, the thinnest nylons still edge out anything in polyester. Nylon also stretches, and that stretch is not always a flaw. In a hard gust, or when someone trips over a guyline in the dark, a little give lets the fabric absorb the shock instead of tearing. And nylon tends to handle abrasion a bit better, which counts if you drag your shelter across rock, sand, and brush.
Ask yourself where you actually sleep. Sheltered forest campsites on maintained trails, or exposed ridgelines and off-trail routes through rock and scrub? The rougher and windier your typical night, the more nylon’s toughness and give start to earn their keep.
The parts beginners never hear about
A few smaller factors quietly shape the decision, and nobody mentions them until you have already bought.
Sun damage over time
Nylon breaks down faster under UV exposure. Sunlight attacks the fiber and slowly makes it brittle, so a nylon shelter that lives in the sun loses strength quicker than a poly one. For a weekend camper this may never matter. For long trips with day after day of open exposure, it adds up.
Price, weight, and repairs
Good news for anyone just starting out: the two fabrics cost roughly the same, and neither carries the steep premium some exotic ultralight materials do. Weight is close to a wash too, since most tents in both fabrics use similar mid-weight cloth. The one edge for nylon is field repair. It tends to take patches and seam sealer a little more willingly, while silpoly can be fussier about tape sticking. Worth knowing before you are kneeling in a leak with a repair kit.
So which one is right for you?
Forget the spec sheets for a second. This decision is really about where and how you camp, so match yourself to one of these two pictures.
Lean silpoly if you camp anywhere wet or dewy, you hate fiddling with guylines, you want a shelter that stays put once it is pitched, and you are new enough that you would rather remove variables than manage them. For most beginners, in most conditions, this is the fabric that quietly deletes the 2 AM problem and asks for almost nothing in return. It is why silpoly has become the default in so many modern trekking pole tents.
Lean silnylon if your nights are rough: frequent high wind, off-trail travel, rocky or sandy ground, or a real hunger for the lightest fabric that exists. It also makes sense if you simply find a great deal on a well-designed nylon shelter, because a smart design in nylon still beats a mediocre one in poly.
One last question to sit with before you buy: on your typical trip, what fails you first, a tent that sags in the rain, or a tent that cannot take a beating? Your honest answer is your fabric.
