Why I Stopped Cooking in My Tent Vestibule (And What I Do Instead When It's Pouring)

For my first two seasons of backpacking, the vestibule was my kitchen. Rain on the fly, wind rattling the guylines, and me hunched over a canister stove just inside the door, telling myself this was the responsible version of cooking in bad weather. It felt like a smart compromise between staying dry and staying safe. It took a genuinely uncomfortable night, and later a much closer look at what I was actually inviting into camp, to learn that cooking in a tent vestibule is not a compromise. It’s a smaller, more sheltered version of the same risk as cooking inside the tent itself, and gas is only part of that risk. The bigger, more likely problem is what the smell of that meal pulls toward your tent while you sleep six inches away from it.

This isn’t a scare piece and it isn’t a guide on “what you should do.” It’s a walk through why the vestibule feels safe, what’s actually happening when you cook there, both the gas risk and the wildlife risk, and what I do now on the days when the rain just will not let up. By the end, you should have a clear sense of which approach fits how you camp.

Why the Vestibule Feels Like the Obvious Compromise

Every beginner arrives at the vestibule the same way. You’re cold, it’s raining sideways, and the vestibule is technically outside the sleeping compartment. It has a floor, it blocks wind, and the fly overhead keeps your stove dry. Compared to standing in the open with rain hitting your pot, it feels like the responsible choice.

Most gear guides even show photos of stoves lit in vestibules, which quietly reinforces the idea that this is normal, expected use.

The problem is the framing. A vestibule is not a separate space from your tent. It’s a partially enclosed extension of it, usually zipped on at least two sides once the weather turns bad. So here’s the question worth sitting with before you light a stove there again: are you actually cooking outside your tent, or just in a smaller, more sealed section of it?

What’s Actually Happening When You Cook in a Vestibule

Stoves burn fuel, and burning fuel produces carbon monoxide, a gas with no color, no smell, and no warning signs until it’s already affecting you. In open air, it disperses. In a confined space like a zipped vestibule, especially in bad weather when every zipper is pulled shut against wind and rain, it accumulates fast. Controlled testing on isobutane and propane canister stoves has shown they can still produce unsafe carbon monoxide levels inside a tent, which is the exact fuel type most ultralight backpackers carry.

This isn’t a fringe concern reserved for high-altitude expeditions. The CDC has documented camping deaths from carbon monoxide where a stove or grill was brought into a zipped tent for warmth or convenience, and outdoor media outlets have covered near-fatal incidents on popular routes where climbers didn’t realize carbon monoxide was building up until symptoms hit.

What makes vestibule cooking especially deceptive is the same weather that pushes you to cook there, wind, snow, driving rain, is also what causes people to seal every vent to stay warm and dry. The worse the conditions, the more sealed the space becomes, and the more sealed the space, the faster gas accumulates.

Ask yourself this before your next rainy trip: on the nights you’d most want to cook in your vestibule, are you also the most likely to have every vent and door zipped tight? For most people, the answer is yes.

The Bigger Risk: What Cooking There Actually Attracts

Carbon monoxide gets most of the attention because it’s dramatic and sudden. In practice, most backpackers who cook in a vestibule will never encounter it. What almost every backpacker who cooks near their tent will eventually encounter is an animal, and this is the risk that’s genuinely underrated for beginners.

Cooking in the vestibule doesn’t just put a stove near your tent, it puts food odor directly against the fabric you sleep in, for the entire time you’re eating and often long after, since scent lingers on stove surfaces, pot walls, and the tent floor itself.

The animals drawn in aren’t limited to bears, and honestly bears are often the least likely visitor depending on where you hike. Mice and other rodents will gnaw straight through tent fabric or a backpack to reach crumbs or wrappers, and they don’t need much of a scent trail to find a reason to try.

Backcountry rangers at popular parks report the same pattern over and over: rock squirrels, deer mice, and ravens have overrun heavily used backcountry campsites specifically because of careless food habits near tents. None of these animals need a full meal left out. A stove that simmered inside your vestibule twenty minutes ago is enough of a signal.

Backcountry guide Andrew Skurka has written about what he calls “mini-bears,” the mice, marmots, squirrels, and porcupines that cause far more damage on a per-trip basis than an actual bear ever will, and has documented a bear biting clean through a fuel canister left just outside a tent, a reminder that it’s not only food itself that draws interest, it’s anything that smells like your kitchen, including fuel and used cookware.

Wild cats, coyotes, and raccoons follow the same logic. They’re opportunistic, not aggressive by nature, but a tent that smells like dinner is a much more interesting target than one that doesn’t.

Here’s the uncomfortable part for vestibule cooking specifically: your cooking area and your sleeping area are separated by a few inches of thin fabric, sometimes none at all if the vestibule and inner tent share a floor. Cook a meal anywhere else, in dangerous animal areas the farther the better. Even if this can only be a few feet away under a tarp, at least any animal drawn in by the smell approaches an empty spot. Cook it in the vestibule, and that same animal is investigating a spot directly against your head or feet while you’re inside trying to sleep.

Worth sitting with before your next trip: if a hungry animal followed the smell of your last vestibule dinner, how far would it actually have to travel to reach you?

The Night I Stopped

The trip that changed my habit wasn’t dramatic. It was a wet, low-visibility night, the kind where you just want dinner done fast so you can get in your bag. I had the vestibule zipped down to a few inches for airflow, told myself that counted as ventilation, and started boiling water.

Partway through, I noticed a low headache and a strange, thick feeling in the air that I chalked up to being tired. It wasn’t until I unzipped the vestibule fully to check the rain that the air actually felt different, and I realized how little fresh air had actually been moving through that small gap.

Nothing catastrophic happened that night. That’s actually the point. Most vestibule cooking doesn’t end in an emergency, it just quietly normalizes a habit that only needs one bad combination of wind direction, ice-blocked vents, or a longer simmer to turn dangerous. I didn’t need a worst-case outcome to decide the habit wasn’t worth keeping.

What later sealed it for me later that same season was waking to something scratching at the vestibule zipper, a critter working to reach the spot where I’d cooked the night before. It moved on once I made noise, but it was a clear sign the smell had outlasted the meal by hours.

What I Do Instead When It’s Pouring

Giving up vestibule cooking doesn’t mean standing in the open getting soaked while you wait for water to boil. It means building a small system for rainy nights, one that keeps both gas and animals in mind, so you’re not improvising in the moment. Here’s what actually works for me now.

  • A separate cooking tarp, pitched away from the tent. A small trekking-pole tarp a few feet from my tent, angled to block wind, gives me a dry spot with fully open sides. Airflow is never a question, and any lingering food smell stays with the tarp, not with my sleeping bag.
  • Cooking and sleeping areas that are never the same spot. Even in bad weather, I treat “where I cook” and “where I sleep” as two separate locations, even if that separation is only a few feet under a shared tarp. That gap is what keeps a curious animal from ending up at the tent wall.
  • Food and trash stored away from the tent immediately after eating. Everything that touched food, wrappers, the pot, my spoon, goes straight into a bear canister or odor-proof bag and gets moved away from camp, not left “for the morning” in a pack pocket near the vestibule.
  • Timing around weather windows. Rain rarely falls at a constant intensity all night. I check for a lighter patch, even five minutes, and cook then rather than fighting the heaviest part of the storm under partial cover.
  • Leaning on no-cook or short-boil meals. On the worst nights, I switch to meals that only need a quick boil rather than a long simmer, which cuts my total exposure time, fuel use, and lingering smell dramatically.
  • Cooking with a partner under a bigger shared shelter. If I’m with others, a larger floorless shelter or open-sided group tarp, pitched apart from the sleeping tents, means one person can cook comfortably while everyone stays out of the rain and away from any zipped, food-scented space.

Here’s a question worth answering honestly: of the options above, which one requires gear or planning you don’t currently carry? That gap is usually the reason people fall back on vestibule cooking in the first place. It’s not that they don’t know the risk, it’s that they haven’t built an alternative that’s actually convenient in the moment.

Building a Rain-Day Cooking System That Fits Your Setup

The right alternative depends on how you already camp. If you hike solo with a trekking-pole shelter, a second small tarp adds weight you may not want to carry for occasional use. If you camp with a group, a shared cooking shelter is often already part of the kit and just needs to become the default cook spot instead of a backup. If you’re mostly on shorter trips near your car or a shelter, waiting out the rain in a real building might be the simplest fix of all.

Whatever setup you land on, three habits matter more than the gear itself:

  1. Treat any covered cooking area as needing genuine cross-ventilation, not just a cracked opening, since a small gap can still trap enough gas to matter.
  2. If you do end up cooking in any semi-enclosed space out of necessity, keep the session as short as possible and step fully into open air the moment you’re done.
  3. This is the one beginners skip most often, put real distance between where food was cooked and where you sleep, then get that food, trash, and cookware into a sealed container and away from both spots before you settle in for the night.

Rodents and larger animals alike are drawn by residual scent long after a meal is finished, not just by food that’s still out.

So, thinking about your own trips: is your current rain plan an actual system, or is it just “cook in the vestibule and hope for the best”? That’s the honest question this whole topic comes down to.

Which Option You’ll Actually Reach For

If you take one thing from this, let it be that the fix isn’t complicated. It’s picking one rain-day method now, while you’re warm and dry and thinking clearly, instead of improvising during a storm when a sealed vestibule looks like the only option. For most solo hikers, that means a small separate tarp or a genuine weather-window habit. For groups, it usually means designating the shared shelter as the real kitchen, vestibules included, from the start.

Whichever you choose, the goal is the same: never letting “it’s raining” be the reason a stove, and the smell it leaves behind, ends up sitting inches from where you sleep. The carbon monoxide risk is real but rare. The animal risk is far more likely, and it’s the one most beginners never think to plan around until something is scratching at the vestibule at 2 a.m.
