Durston Gear released its most anticipated shelter of the year on July 29, and if you blinked, you missed it. The new X-Dome Pro 1+, billed as the world’s lightest freestanding doublewall tent, sold out its entire first production run in a matter of minutes. Some buyers reported tents vanishing from their carts mid checkout.
The frenzy was not hype for hype’s sake. On paper, this tent rewrites a category.
What launched
The X-Dome Pro 1+ is the Dyneema flagship version of the X-Dome 1+ that Durston introduced in the freestanding category in 2024. It pairs the brand’s patent pending X-Dome geometry with Dyneema Composite Fabrics, a 0.55 fly and a 0.67 floor, joined with bonded seams rather than stitching. The pole set is a second generation Easton carbon design that now uses carbon inserts at the joints as well, making the structure fully carbon.
The result is a complete tent weight of 27.5 oz (780 g) with the regular interior. That number is the headline. No other fully freestanding, true doublewall shelter on the market comes in lighter, and Durston’s own comparison chart puts the closest competitors at roughly 845 to 1130 g.
Crucially, the weight savings did not come from shrinking the tent. The Pro shares the same palatial dimensions as the standard X-Dome 1+:
- 23.5 sq ft floor, widening to 50″ at the head end
- 90″ of usable length on the diagonal, fitting hikers up to about 6’6″
- 42″ peak height, roughly 3 to 5″ taller than comparable tents
- 9.2 sq ft vestibule positioned beside the door instead of blocking it
It also keeps the features that made the original X-Dome a standout: an external pole structure with a natural fly first pitch so the interior stays dry setting up in rain, a 100 percent freestanding design with zero mandatory stakes, dual peak vents, magnetic door toggles, and pockets at the crossbar ends that let you add trekking poles as a counter opposed third arch. Fully guyed out with poles in place, Durston reports successful testing in winds above 100 km/hr.
Price at launch: $849 USD.
The Sellout
Demand collided with a small first batch. Durston has said material shortages limited how many tents it could build for this release, and the entire allocation was gone almost as soon as the listing went live. Reddit threads filled within the hour, split between the lucky few posting order confirmations and everyone else describing carts that emptied while they typed in payment details.
Durston posted an apology on the product page shortly after, acknowledging the frustration and stressing that scarcity was never the plan. The company has carried a reputation for hard to get gear since the pandemic era supply crunches, but even by those standards this launch moved exceptionally fast.
When you can actually get one
If you missed out, there are two dates to know.
A large restock of the regular X-Dome 1+, the polyester version at 35 oz and a lower price point, lands August 18. A much larger production run of the Pro follows in the fall of 2026, and Durston says it expects that release to be big enough to get everyone a tent. A solid interior option for the Pro is planned for late 2026 as well.
The practical advice: sign up for the notification list on the product page now. If the first release proved anything, it is that this tent will not sit in stock waiting for you to think it over.
Why it matters
Ultralight shelters have long forced a choice: go trekking pole supported and singlewall to chase the lowest weight, or accept a meaningful penalty for the convenience of a freestanding doublewall design. At 780 g, the X-Dome Pro 1+ narrows that gap further than any tent before it, and the market’s response, an entire batch gone in minutes at $849, suggests hikers have been waiting for exactly this.
